Our Directors

Our Chorus Director History: 1949 to Present Day

Distinguished directors have played a vital role in shaping the Mount Baker Toppers’ sound and spirit.  Denny Stiers an Evergreen District Hall of Fame director, winning the title 5 times with three different choruses (Lake Washington Skippers, Cascade Chorus, and Northwest Sound Chorus).  His artestry and dedication to innovating new and entertaining packages such as The Clown Package (Cascade Chorus 1988), The Pirate Package (Cascade Chorus 1990), motivated the district to apply a more artistic and entertaining experience for the audience, rather than a chorus of men standing on the risers ringing chords. Also a three-time Evergreen District Quartet Champion himself, quartet coach, and music arranger, he brought decades of experience and passion to the Toppers.

When Denny retired in 1999, leadership passed to Doug Broersma, who brought a vision of musical versatility and skillful choral direction while leading the Toppers to musical exellence and a connection to the community for 18 years. Following Doug’s retirement, Turner Stiers stepped in as frontline director. A two-time District Quartet Champion, Topper's performance coach (2015-2017) and asssitant director (2015-2017), Turner continues that directorial legacy today as co-director alongside our newest addition, the musical genius that is Josh Honrud. Josh, also a two time Evergreen District Quartet Champion with The Marksmen, including The New Originals (2010), an all Toppers Quartet that included Turner on Bass and Josh on Baritone, brings fresh energy and a deep love for harmony and all things music. Josh has served as Assistant Director and vocal coach since 2017 and has continued to bring whimsical passion and a new way of thinking about how we do this and why we do this  Each of these directors has contributed uniquely, helping the chorus grow both musically and as a community.
